The City of Calgary wants to introduce a pet licence reward program. This is an attempt to increase compliance with the city's licensing by-law. Each year when they mail out your annual licence, they'd send you a rewards card giving you discounts at participating local businesses.
Has anyone heard of a program like this in another city? Please let us know!
The city operates an animal shelter which is separate from the Calgary Humane Society. If a city bylaw officer picks up a stray (or lost animal), it goes to the city shelter. The Humane Society is a not-for-profit society. It employs peace officers with the power to enforce Alberta's Animal Protection Act. If someone can no longer care for an animal and wants to surrender it, they can take it to the Humane Society, but not to the city. Both have an adoption service. I think there is some cooperation between the two, but I don't know the details. (Off topic, I have to mention that there are also many volunteer rescue societies operating in the city as well.)
One fantastic benefit of the city licence is that it helps lost cats and dogs get home! Each tag has a unique ID number, and even if the pet gets lost without the tag, the city also keeps track of microchip numbers and ID tattoos. Contact info is updated annually when the licence is renewed, which doesn't happen with other registries. When we found a Yorkie wandering in the park, the city was able to identify her and get her back home!

Trevor the Rottweiler-Shepherd cross was an abused dog. City of Whitehorse bylaw officers brought him to a Humane Society Yukon shelter. He was nursed back to health and adopted in May. The woman who adopted Trevor signed a contract agreeing to return him to the shelter if she could not care for him. She violated that contract by giving Trevor to her brother.
While in her brother's care, Trevor is alleged to have attacked seven people, biting some. The brother surrendered Trevor to the City of Whitehorse pound, where he was declared dangerous and scheduled to be killed.
Humane Society Yukon challenged the city in court, casting doubt on whether Trevor is dangerous and the legality of his being surrendered to the pound in light of the adoption contract. City staff staunchly maintain their prerogative to kill him.
A Yukon Supreme Court judge has ordered a behavioural assessment prior to rendering a decision.

Copper the family dog managed to do what two-year-old Natalie Jasmer's siblings, parents, police, firefighters, and neighbours couldn't: find her when she was playing hide-and-seek!
Natalie fell asleep in her well-chosen hiding spot, a drawer under the washing machine, while playing the game at home. When they couldn't find her, the family became frantic and called for help. All they had to do was ask Copper!

Canadian pet supply chain Petcetera is going out of business. It was Petcetera's corporate philosophy not to sell dogs, cats, and rabbits, but instead to help animal shelters and rescue groups find new homes for pets by providing in-store adoption centres. This was a very successful program.
The B.C. SPCA is now in trouble because it no longer has Petcetera's help. The Vancouver shelter is overcrowded with cats. Some are being housed in the dog section due to lack of space. Stress can result in illness and this can spread rapidly in an overcrowded shelter.
The B.C. SPCA is requesting help from people willing to foster cats until they can be adopted.
