We took this photo of bas-relief sculptures of Akitas outside Shibuya Station in Tokyo (click on it to open hi-res)
A new movie has been made based on the story of Hachiko, the faithful Akita. The real Hachiko lived from 1923 to 1935. For a year after moving to Tokyo with his owner, Professor Ueno, Hachiko met him at the train station every evening after he returned home from the University of Tokyo. Then one day Professor Ueno did not return, having passed away at work. Hachiko was given a new home, but every day for 10 years he returned to Shibuya Station to wait for his friend.
Hachiko became a national legend. A bronze statue honouring him was erected at the station in 1934 and Hachiko was present at the unveiling. A memorial ceremony is held at the station every April 8th.
The movie debuted at the Seattle festival last Saturday and will open in Japanese theatres on August 8th. The North American release date has not been announced. At least that gives you some time to stock up on Kleenex!
Richard Gere plays the lead role and is one of the producers of the new film. The screenplay was adapted from on a 1987 Japanese movie. Richard Gere also starred in Shall We Dance, a 2004 Hollywood remake of a 1996 Japanese movie.

The Palm Dog is a fun, unofficial award for the best canine actor in a film presented at the annual Cannes festival. Some of the contenders include a pack of animated dogs from Disney's Up and a fox (there's no separate prize for foxes, so a special allowance was made). We'll let you know who wins!

Having worked for several years with dogs, Cesar Millan has now become one of the world’s most sought-after dog trainers. Cesar currently hosts the popular dog show titled “The Dog Whisperer” on National Geographic Channel. A very entertaining and charismatic host, Cesar has made the show a huge favorite amongst dog owners. Owing to this, he has several fans who implement such techniques on house pets. Still, there are some who have a feeling that the methodology adopted by Cesar is inappropriate and extremely harsh for most pet owners (novice trainers). I therefore discuss Cesar’s approach to dog training with brief elaboration on its pros and cons.
Pros of Cesar Millan's Dog Training:
Cons of Cesar’s Dog Training:
